Washington Co-workers Graduate from SAW

Seven co-workers graduated from the 2011
School at Work class hosted at Mercy Hospital
Washington. They are, back row from left,
Ashley Rogers, Tonya Wagemann, Staci Woodward
and Christy Matchell; and front row from left,
Nicole Perkowski, Irene Buenemann and
Barbara Broeker.

Mercy is offering an educational program that allows students ? Mercy co-workers ? to prepare for college and give them tools for advancement within the organization.

School at Work(SAW) is a career development program for entry-level workers in health care. SAW?s instructional model helps students refresh essential skills and gain an understanding of healthcare-specific subjects.

The six-month curriculum imparts communication skills, time and stress management, concentration tools and college prep.

?SAW students have the potential to advance to higher-level positions or higher learning but they need a refresher course to gain skills and confidence to take those steps,? said Sally Plowman, educational and organizational development specialist and SAW instructor at Mercy Hospital Washington. ?SAW gives co-workers the tools and confidence to move forward.?

SAW also alleviates recruitment shortages and has the potential to allow Mercy to look inside its own facilities to fill openings.

?Mercy provides professional development because we want our co-workers to be successful, and this program invests in our people, which strengthens the ministry,? said Plowman. ?It also gives co-workers new skills, which brings them better opportunities and creates stronger families and communities.?

Seven students graduated from the 2011 SAW program in November. Since then, two SAW graduates have been promoted into higher-level positions at the hospital and another is seeking higher education.

Union resident Christy Matchell, who works in nutritional services, is a SAW graduate seeking a full-time supervisory position. She has worked for the hospital for almost 15 years. ?I?m glad I went through the SAW program because I was able to refresh skills and learn others,? said Matchell. ?I feel more valuable as a co-worker and better prepared for advancement.?

Mercy is the eighth largest Catholic health care system in the U.S. and serves more than 3 million people annually. Mercy includes 30 hospitals, more than 200 outpatient facilities, 38,000 co-workers and 1,500 integrated physicians in Arkansas, Kansas, Missouri and Oklahoma. Mercy also has outreach ministries in Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas. For more about Mercy, visit www.mercy.net.

US: Iran 'flailing' for friends in Latin America

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's upcoming four-nation tour of Latin America is a sign of desperation as sanctions increasingly isolate his country, the Obama administration said Friday, as it warned the leader's hosts against expanding ties with Iran.

The State Department dismissed Ahmadinejad's planned visits to Venezuela, Nicaragua, Cuba and Ecuador next week as Iran "flailing" for new friends as the sanctions bite. Some lawmakers have expressed deep concern that Iran is boosting its presence in the Western Hemisphere to the detriment of U.S. national security interests.

"As the regime feels increasing pressure, it is desperate for friends and flailing around in interesting places to find new friends," State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland told reporters. "We are making absolutely clear to countries around the world that now is not the time to be deepening ties, not security ties, not economic ties, with Iran."

"Rather, it's in the entire international community's interest to make clear to Iran that it's got a choice," she said. "It can remain in an international isolation, or it can comply with its obligations and start cooperating and rejoin the community of nations."

Nuland said Iran must stop defying international pressure to prove that its nuclear program is peaceful and that countries must make it clear that the only way to end its isolation is to come clean about its atomic ambitions. The U.S. and its allies accuse Iran of trying to develop atomic weapons under the cover of a civilian nuclear energy program. Iran denies the charge.

Ahmadinejad has courted leftist, populist and anti-U.S. Latin American leaders for some time, notably Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez and Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega. During his stop next week in Managua, Ahmadinejad is to attend Ortega's inauguration. The U.S. will be represented at the ceremony by a mid-ranking diplomat from the U.S. embassy, officials said.

In Venezuela, Chavez said on Friday that Ahmadinejad is coming to the region despite tensions in the Persian Gulf.

"The Yankees are determined to provoke wars, provoke tensions," Chavez said on television during a visit to the central state of Portuguesa.

Chavez said the "central purpose" of Ahmadinejad's visit is to attend Ortega's inauguration in Nicaragua.

Ahmadinejad's visit to Washington's backyard has raised eyebrows on Capitol Hill where the chairwoman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, R-Fla., likened it to a "tour of tyrants" that is proof of Iran's expanding interest in the region.

"Ahmadinejad's desire to strengthen ties with anti-American dictators and expand Iranian influence in the Western Hemisphere directly threatens U.S. security interests," she said in a statement.

"This is a threat which we cannot ignore," Ros-Lehtinen said, pledging to hold hearings on the matter to discuss what the administration is doing to counter Iranian outreach in the Western Hemisphere.

Canadian family killed in Jamaica road crash (AP)

KINGSTON, Jamaica ? A Canadian couple, their toddler son and his Jamaican grandmother have been killed in a head-on collision with a truck while they tried to rush the feverish child to a hospital, police said Thursday.

A Jamaican police statement said the Canadian family and the boy's grandmother were driving Wednesday in a Toyota Corolla when they collided with a truck traveling in the opposite direction.

Police said the family from the Toronto area and the grandmother were pronounced dead at a hospital. The truck driver was uninjured.

John Babcock, a spokesman for Canadian Minister of State of Foreign Affairs Diane Ablonczy, said in an email to The Associated Press that "our thoughts and prayers go out to family and friends of those killed in this tragic accident."

Consular officials in Jamaica can provide assistance to the victims' relatives, according to Babcock.

Killed in the wreck were Garieno and Diane Dixon, 2-year-old Nichile, and grandmother Marie Myrie-Phillips, according to local media.

The Jamaica Gleaner newspaper reported that Garieno Dixon, a 27-year-old construction worker, apparently tried to overtake a line of traffic on a roadway and crashed into the truck.

Myrie-Smith's husband, Gerald, told the Gleaner that Nichile had been in Jamaica since September and had started to develop respiratory problems. He said doctors told the family that he "was not asthmatic but there was something blocking his airway and he needed surgery."

Police are still investigating the deadly crash.

NBC TV chief says fall season "worse than I hoped for" (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) ? NBC entertainment chief Robert Greenblatt admitted on Friday that the struggling TV network got off to a "really bad" start last fall, after low ratings and cancellations of several high-profile new shows.

But Greenblatt said he had high hopes for upcoming new shows including musical drama series "Smash" and the return of surprise 2011 summer talent show "The Voice."

"We've had a really bad fall, worse than what I hoped for, but about what I expected," Greenblatt told reporters at the Television Critics Association.

"We have a long road ahead of us, but bear with us," he said.

NBC has been struggling for years to climb from its bottom place among the four major U.S. TV networks. But it was forced to cancel its much-hyped but controversial drama "The Playboy Club" after three episodes in October. New comedy "Free Agents" met the same fate and NBC stopped production of crime drama "Prime Suspect".

Greenblatt joined NBC just a year ago after cable giant Comcast bought a majority stake in parent company NBCUniversal and shook-up the top management.

"Was the 'Playboy Club' too dark? I think it was just a rejected concept," said Greenblatt. "I don't think people were as fascinated by that milieu and that period and I think it was a bit obscure."

Greenblatt called "Prime Suspect" "a disappointment" saying he thought star Maria Bello was "incredible."

But he added; "I learned it's going to take a while, there was no great revelation or epiphany about fall except how hard it is to break through...Audiences seem to be entertained by comedy and escapist, and they love fairytales now. But we keep trying to figure out what's going to work and break through."

"COMMUNITY" COMING BACK

Low-rated comedy series "Community," was pushed off NBC's schedule, leading to speculation that it too had been dropped.

Greenblatt said the show will be back but he did not confirm a timeslot, saying he was "curious to see what something else would do".

In light of fall's failures, Greenblatt said the network was eager to hold onto Ryan Seacrest, who produces the popular "Keeping Up with the Kardashians" reality show on NBCUniversal's E! channel, along with other programs.

He said rumors regarding Seacrest replacing Matt Lauer on NBC's "Today" show were "premature" as the network was eager to keep Lauer and find a bigger role for Seacrest, including producing more of his shows on NBC as well as E!.

"We would love to keep Ryan Seacrest in the family primarily because of E!. He has a huge presence on that network and in the time that he began the E! News franchise, he's become an incredible star," said Greenblatt.

Greenblatt also welcomed the hiring of shock jock Howard Stern to the judging panel for "America's Got Talent," calling him a "very thoughtful, very intelligent person".

NBC said singer Harry Connick Jr. would join long-running crime series "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit" as a guest star.

Mariska Hargitay will be remaining with the show as Detective Olivia Benson and will find a new love interest with Connick's character as a straight-shooting prosecutor. Connick, who is currently starring on Broadway, will first appear on January 18.

The Best Budget-Tracking App for iPhone [Iphone App Directory]

The Best Budget-Tracking App for iPhoneThere are many great budget-tracking apps for the iPhone, offering plenty of variety. While the best choice for you will depend on your personal needs, our favorite is Jumsoft Money for its helpful feature set, great spending breakdowns, and easy input methods.

The Best Budget-Tracking App for iPhone

  • Manage multiple types of accounts
  • Create a simple or complex budget
  • Schedule repeat transactions (e.g. receiving a paycheck or paying the rent) so you don't have to re-enter every time they occur
  • Work with multiple currencies
  • Versatile enough to handle budgets for a business or individual
  • Offers great, easy-to-understand budget overviews
  • Beautiful graphs show your spending breakdown for a given time period
  • Syncs with the Mac desktop app of the same name
  • Simple interface with a nice design

The Best Budget-Tracking App for iPhone

Money was designed to work with its Mac desktop app counterpart, but is great as a standalone iPhone app as well. It has an amazing budgeting feature that lets you really break down you budget exactly how you want it and get a quickly, graphical overview of your spending over a given time period. One of my favorite features in Money, however, is reoccurring transactions. Chances are you get a paycheck, pay rent and utilities, pay for a few services like Netflix or Dropbox, and so on. Rather than entering these transactions every time they occur, you can just tell Money to enter them for you on a repeat date each month. This saves a lot of time. While Money can be a little overwhelming at first, once you get used to it you'll find you can do things like favorite categories to make input quicker. These sorts of things make it possible to reduce the comprehensive information within the app to just the information you need. It'll take a little work to get going, but after that things will work very smoothly.

The Best Budget-Tracking App for iPhone

Money used to be free, but now it costs $2. For what you get, $2 is pretty reasonable but free was definitely a more attractive price tag. Nonetheless, Money's primary disadvantage comes from its mild learning curve. Once you understand how to use it, which only takes a minute or two, you'll be able to do everything you need to do quickly. That said, it can be a little confusing at first because there's nothing guiding you along as you learn how it works. For example, it's not clear that you add transactions by first tapping on an account. This makes sense once you realize it, but you wouldn't necessarily know this intuitively. There are a few instances where you might struggle to figure out what to do, but with a little exploration you'll get there.

The Best Budget-Tracking App for iPhone

Mint (Free) is the obvious choice for most. The app is very nicely made and it, of course, integrates with Mint's online financial tracking services. While Mint can be a great budget tracking solution, it's not designed for it and doesn't allow you the large amount of control you'll find with many other apps. If that's okay, and you're looking to spend less time tracking and more time getting a basic understanding of your finances, it's an excellent choice.

Pennies ($3) is a very simple and nicely-designed app to track your spending. All you do is set your budget and add expenses in various categories. Pennies offers a fuel gauge-style overview of how much money you have left for the month and provides a breakdown of your categorical spending as well. It's great at what it does, but it hasn't been updated since March, 2009. While the app works fine, some of the graphics haven't been updated for devices with the retina display. They actually look pretty good nonetheless, but you are buying into an old app and that means you shouldn't expect to see updates?even if there are bugs.

Left to Spend ($1) is an even simpler option, in which you specify your monthly budget and tell it when you've spent some money. It removes any spending from the total and just shows you stark white text on a black background to let you know how much you have?you guessed it?left to spend. That's all it does. If you're a minimalist who wants to track your budget, this is the app for you.

SplashMoney ($5), PockeyMoney ($5), MoneyBook ($3), and iReconcile ($3) are good options if you're looking for a robust feature set. (Not to mention iReconcile is very nicely designed, which is both difficult and unusual in this category. That said, none of these other apps are poorly designed?nor should that be a priority here.) They all provide plenty of ways to track your money, offer up nice graphs to show you what's going on, and methods of exporting your data. They're all solid choices.

Panasonic unveils new line of Bluetooth-enabled hearing aids

Panasonic R1-W
Hearing aids aren't the sexiest gadgets on Earth, but Panasonic has done some interesting stuff with its R1-W series of in-ear audio-boosters. For one, they come packing Bluetooth for directly tethering to a mobile or landline phone using the Hearing Hub and have an add-on audio transmitter than can beam content from a TV or other source directly to the aids. The Hearing Hub also has a voice memo feature so that wearers can take notes for themselves and play them back in an easy to hear format. All that and it manages a pretty impressive 300 hours on a single set of batteries. Check out the complete PR after the break.
