On our business applications suite (using QualityLogic's hardware and software for timing), it scored reasonably well for speed, at an effective 3.4 pages per minute (ppm). That makes the 4620 significantly slower than the MFC-J430w at 4.3 ppm, but keep in mind that the Brother printer's fast speed is one of the reasons it's an Editors' Choice.

As another point of reference, the 4620 is notably faster than the somewhat more expensive Dell V525w All-in-One Wireless Inkjet Printer ($129.99 direct, 3 stars), with its more typical speed for this price range, at 2.9 ppm. Note too that much like the 4620's speed for business applications, its photo speed was also reasonably fast, but short of impressive, averaging 1 minute 3 seconds for a 4 by 6.

The printer's output quality is generally par for an inkjet. Text quality is arguably a touch below par, but best described as being at the bottom of the tight range where the vast majority of inkjet printers fall. Unless you have an unusual need for small fonts, you should find it suitable for most business needs. Graphics output quality is dead on par, which makes it easily good enough for business needs.

Photos were also par overall, but the rating breaks down as better than par for color and a little worse than par for black and white. More precisely, black and white photos in my tests showed a slight tint and a lack of deep dark blacks. Color photos, however, were at least as good as the high end of the range I would expect from drug store prints. If color is all you print, the issues for black and white are irrelevant.

If you're looking for an inexpensive, office-centric personal printer, the HP Officejet 4620 e-All-in-One will certainly do the job. I'd like it better if it also had an Ethernet connector, so you wouldn't be forced to have Wi-Fi on your network to use the features that make it an e-All-in-One. But if you already have a Wi-Fi network or don't mind setting one up, that's not an issue. If you don't need those features, you should also consider the Brother MFC-J430w with its faster speed. But whether you want those features or not, the HP Officejet 4620 e-All-in-One is a capable choice and well worth considering.

For over 30 years,?Dr.?Georgianna?Donadio?has been a pioneer in the field of behavioral health, working with healthcare professionals and patients to change? behaviors that lead to improved health. Her pioneering work is the foundation for the newly published book?Changing Behavior: Immediately Transform Your Relationships with Easy-to-Learn, Proven Communication Skills.?The book was the winner of the 2012 Indie Book Awards (Relationships) and is highly rated on Amazon (67 five stars reviews at the time of publishing this).?Today I?m very happy to feature an interview I recently did with Dr. Donadio regarding her book.

1. What led you to write this book?

A very commonplace motive ? I grew up in a significantly dysfunctional family that had very poor communication skills. It was a painful experience that did not prepare me to create successful or fulfilling relationships. Subsequently, I had a strong desire to know how healthy relationships worked and what I needed to know to create them.

For years I avoided writing about the subject as my focus was on the vast amount of work and synthesis required to solidify the research and the outcomes into a cohesive model. This was important so that anyone could understand and apply the skills in their communications with others. At this time, there is so much anxiety in our culture, and so much relational disconnection because of technology, that it became clear it was time to put the information out there for those seeking solutions for better communication skills.

2. Why is your book different from the hundreds of books on the market devoted to helping people improve their relationships?

This book does not attempt to ?advise? or ?instruct? people in how to make relationships turn out the way they may want them to or to even make them ?wonderful?- or for readers to achieve their goals in their relationships. It invites the reader to understand the following:

• Why we all behave as we do.
• What needs to take place in relationship to ourselves and others to trust and welcome the process of change.
• What are relational behaviors that are proven to transform suffering or struggling (or even ordinary relationships) into relationships that are thriving and extraordinary.

3. Change can be difficult, especially for people who have behaved or communicated in a certain way for years. How does the behavioral change model described in your book make change achievable?

If someone wanted to become a great French chef they would have to (1) have the motivation to learn (2) be willing to consistently apply the steps to achieve their goal. This is no different. It doesn?t matter how we have behaved previously. This step by step method deals with how we choose to be with another person in this moment and not how we may have been with them or others in the past. These steps shift both the intention and the outcome of the interactions.

4. What is something people may be surprised to learn about changing behavior?

You can make the decision to change your behavior in an instant. For most of us it is about the pain/pleasure balance. When our discomfort or pain either within a relationship or being without relationships becomes too great, and out weights the pleasure of ?the known? way we have behaved previously, we can and usually do commit to learning and applying skills and tools to make changes. Most change is temporary unless there is an emotional shifting that occurs. That emotional shifting is dramatically facilitated by the Pure Presence model.

Polls on gay marriage not yet reflected in votes

NEW YORK (AP) ? Poll after poll shows public support for same-sex marriage steadily increasing, to the point where it's now a majority viewpoint. Yet in all 32 states where gay marriage has been on the ballot, voters have rejected it.

It's possible the streak could end in November, when Maine, Maryland, Minnesota and Washington state are likely to have closely contested gay marriage measures on their ballots.

For now, however, there remains a gap between the national polling results and the way states have voted. It's a paradox with multiple explanations, from political geography to the likelihood that some conflicted voters tell pollsters one thing and then vote differently.

"It's not that people are lying. It's an intensely emotional issue," said Amy Simon, a pollster based in Oakland, Calif. "People can report to you how they feel at the moment they're answering the polls, but they can change their mind."

California experienced that phenomenon in November 2008, when voters, by a 52-48 margin, approved a ban on same-sex marriage in the state constitution. A statewide Field Poll that September indicated Proposition 8 would lose decisively; an updated poll a week before the vote still showed it trailing by 5 percentage points.

California is an unusual case. It's one of a few reliably Democratic states that have had a statewide vote rebuffing same-sex marriage. The vast majority of the referendums have been in more conservative states, which have a greater predilection for using ballot measures to set social policy. The 32 states that have rejected gay marriage at the polls make up just over 60 percent of the U.S. population.

Voters in liberal states such as Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut and New York, where gay marriage was legalized by judges or legislators, might vote to affirm those decisions but haven't had the opportunity.

Most of the states that voted against gay marriage did so between 2004 and 2008. Since then, only Maine in 2009 and North Carolina on May 8 have rebuffed same-sex marriage in referendums, while legislatures in Washington state, Maryland, New Jersey, Hawaii, New York, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Illinois and Delaware have voted for same-sex marriage or civil unions.

In all, there are now six states with legal same-sex marriage and nine more granting gay and lesbian couples broad marriage-style rights via civil unions or domestic partnerships. Together, those 15 states account for about 35 percent of the U.S. population.

Over the past year, there's been a stream of major national polls indicating that a majority of people support same-sex marriage. According to a Washington Post-ABC News poll released Wednesday, 53 percent of those questioned say gay marriage should be legal, a new high for the poll, while 39 percent, a new low, say it should be illegal.

Political consultant Frank Schubert, a leading strategist for campaigns against same-sex marriage in California and elsewhere, said such polls are misleading and he asserted that same-sex marriage would be rejected if a national referendum were held now.

"The pollsters are asking if same-sex marriage should be legal or illegal, and that phrasing is problematic because it implies some government sanction against same-sex couples," Schubert said. "People want to be sympathetic to same-sex couples, so polls that use that language aren't particularly useful."

The more useful question, Schubert said, is whether marriage should be defined as the union of a man and a woman ? the gist of the constitutional amendments approved in 30 states.

"If you ask that question, you get strong majorities," Schubert said.

Mark DeCamillo, director of the Field Poll in California, agreed with Schubert that same-sex marriage probably would lose in a hypothetical national referendum now. One important factor, he said, is whether there would be more intensity among supporters or opponents.

In California, same-sex marriage has such overwhelming support today that Prop 8 almost certainly would be overturned if a new state referendum were held, DeCamillo said.

The latest Field Poll, in February, measured voter approval of gay marriage among registered California voters at 59 percent, which was the highest in 35 years of polling on the issue, while only 34 percent disapproved. In the first Field Poll on the topic, in 1977, 59 percent opposed gay marriage and 28 percent were in favor.

Nonetheless, the largest gay-rights group in the state, Equality California, remains cautious and isn't yet ready to begin a campaign to overturn Prop 8. A federal court has struck down the law, but that ruling has been appealed.

"We aren't confident that the level of support is stable enough to withstand the rigors of a referendum," said spokeswoman Rebekah Orr. "We know that people are conflicted. Their intellectual position can show up in a poll and their emotional position shows up in the voting booth."

California is among 30 states where voters have approved amendments limiting marriage to unions of one man and one woman. In Hawaii, voters passed an amendment in 1998 empowering the Legislature to ban gay marriage, which it proceeded to do. The ban remains in effect, though Hawaii lawmakers approved civil unions last year.

The other statewide vote was in Maine in 2009, when 53 percent of the voters overturned a law that would have legalized same-sex marriage.

The issue is back on Maine's ballot for Nov. 6, with voters getting another chance to approve same-sex marriage. Schubert, who is advising gay-marriage opponents in Maine, depicts it as the toughest contest for his side among the four statewide elections this fall.

In Minnesota, voters will be deciding whether to approve a gay-marriage ban similar to those in the other 30 states. In Maryland and Washington, assuming enough valid signatures are gathered by gay marriage opponents, there will be ballot measures seeking to overturn same-sex marriage laws passed by legislators this year.

However those four referendums turn out, there's widespread belief among gay rights activists and many pollsters that support for same-sex marriage will continue to grow nationwide.

"The numbers are inexorably moving in one direction," said DeCamillo. "Older folks, who are more in opposition, are dying out and younger folks are more inclined to support it. It's not rocket science."

He said support for gay marriage is surging in California among young Latinos and Asian-Americans. Nationally, according the recent Washington Post-ABC News poll, support has risen among blacks since President Barack Obama's endorsement of same-sex marriage on May 9.

Phyllis Watts, a consulting psychologist from Sacramento, Calif., has worked with several recent ballot-measure campaigns, including the failed effort to defeat Prop 8 in California and a successful drive last year to defeat an anti-abortion "personhood" measure in Mississippi.

She believes a statewide vote in favor of same-sex marriage is likely to come soon. But she suggests that any particular poll should be viewed with caution.

"People are in a fluid state around same-sex marriage. They really can feel one way one day and another way another day," she said. "I don't think the polls are able to track, with a level of nuance, what's actually occurring inside people's hearts."

Elderly couple dead in Ottawa-area fire | Canada - London Free Press

An elderly husband and wife are dead after fire broke out at an Ottawa-area retirement home Friday night.

Emergency officials in Hawkesbury, Ont., responded to the blaze at the Place Mont-Roc around 9:30 p.m.

The home to 90 residents was evacuated, but Anne-Marie Bonin, 84, and Jean-Paul Bonin, 87, were caught inside and died.

No other residents were injured in the fire.

Some of the residents were taken to hospital for precautionary measures, and more than 30 others - those not sent home with family members - were taken to a nearby retirement home.

Family members wishing to know more about the status of a resident family member can call the Prescott-Russell Residence at 613-632-2755.

The cause of the fire is still unknown and is being investigated.

You know you need new tires, but you?re not sure what type. You look at a tire to get the size: 225, 50, R, 16, 92, H. All the way to the service center you keep repeating it over and over. You even say it over in your mind while waiting in line. Then you get to the counter and the manager asks what size you need. Then your mind goes blank.

Tire size can be confusing. There?s so much on the side of the tire, and it?s hard to keep straight.

Even though there?s a lot on a tire ? if you know what it all means, it?s actually more helpful than confusing. Let?s start with the size number.

For example, let?s say a tire reads: 225 50 R 16 92 H. The 225 part is the width of the tire in millimeters ? the width between the sidewalls of an inflated tire with no load. The 50 is the aspect ratio ? the ratio of the sidewall height to the tread width. Off-road tires will have a higher number and high performance tires will have a lower number.

The R signifies it?s a radial tire. And 16 is the rim or wheel size in inches.

The 92 is the load rating index ? it?s the load carrying capacity of a tire. The higher the number, the more it can safely carry. Your empty vehicle can be safe with a lower number, but you?ll need a higher rating if you routinely haul heavy loads. The next letter is the speed rating. Not all tires are speed rated. The ratings generally follow the alphabet: the further up the alphabet, the higher the speed rating ? with the exception of H ? it comes between U and V (don?t ask why).

There?s a lot of fine print that you probably need a magnifying glass to read. But there are a couple of other large print items of interest. One is the tread type: highway, mud and snow, all season, severe snow, etc.

And then there?re the Uniform Tire Quality Grading System markings. The first is a tread wear index. 100 is the base line ? a lower number is poorer and a higher number is better. All things being equal, a tire rated 200 would wear twice as long, on a government test track, than one rated at 100. These wear grades are only valid within a manufacturer?s product line ? you can?t compare with other manufacturers. And it?s important to note that a lower rating might be just what you want ? a high performance, sticky tire has a softer rubber compound and won?t wear as long, but boy, will it take those corners.

The next is a traction grade. This measures the tire?s ability to stop on wet pavement in government tests. A ? the best, B ? intermediate, C ? acceptable.

Temperature grade measures a tire?s resistance to heat build up in government tests. A, B and C ? from best to acceptable.

It?s safe to go with the original equipment recommendations that came on your car. But if you want to make adjustments, you?ll now be better equipped to communicate with your tire professional.

CAIRO (AP) ? Election fever has even come to Cairo's Garbage City, the sprawling neighborhood built on ? and living from ? the waste of the Egyptian capital.

The tens of thousands of impoverished residents of the district are almost all Christians. For generations, they have collected the garbage from the city of nearly 20 million; they sort it then recycle and sell what they can. Their homes are built in and around piles of the refuse, where their livestock graze.

Like other Egyptians, they are now savoring the prospect of having their voice heard as the country begins voting on Wednesday for a new president, the first since the ouster last year of longtime leader Hosni Mubarak.

The overwhelming concern for many of them is to stop any Islamist candidate from winning. Many of Egypt's Christian minority ? about 20 percent of the population of 85 million ? are worried that if the fundamentalist Muslim Brotherhood candidate wins and moved to implement Islamic law, they will suffer greater discrimination.

As a result, many are turning to the most anti-Islamist candidate on the slate of 13 hopefuls ? Ahmed Shafiq, a former air force commander who was Mubarak's last prime minister.

Anwar Rizk, a garbage collector in the neighborhood, says he's backing Shafiq because "I fear the Muslim Brotherhood and the Salafis," referring to a movement of ultraconservative Islamists. "We have Muslims living here as our brothers in very good conditions, but I fear the Muslim Brotherhood because they are only after their own good."

His fellow resident, Iskandar Shafiq ? no relation to the candidate ? agrees and is also impressed by the candidate's strongman image.

"Honestly we are going to elect Ahmed Shafiq because he is the one that can provide safety and security," he said. "We feel this man is a politician like no other and frankly we have always known this man as a politician."

Along with Shafiq, the other front-runners in the contest are former foreign minister Amr Moussa; the Brotherhood's Mohammed Morsi; and a moderate Islamist, Abdel-Moneim Abolfotoh, who has gained support from some liberals for his more open views. A leftist, Hamdeen Sabahi, has also gained ground among those who want neither an Islamist nor a former regime figure. Though few Christians are likely to vote for the Brotherhood's Morsi, the community's vote could be divided among the others.
